ㅤㅤher story in briefㅤㅤ

Suffering from childhood amnesia, Alessa has no memory of her life before she was 10 years old. Displaced in a foreign land, she was adopted and raised as a budding courtesan highly trained in dance. On the night before her debut, she witnessed the murder of her mentor and surrogate mother, Laila Yasin. Before her death, Laila wrote a letter to Alessa revealing that her life as a courtesan had been a front for being a spy for the Shinobi. Through her contacts, Laila had discovered a plot to kidnap Alessa. Failing in her attempt to stop this, she urged Alessa to flee Radz-at-Han.From the letter, Alessa also learned that the only possession she had on her when she was found as a child was a wooden box. Laila had kept it from her, hoping that she would not be burdened by an unhappy past. However, Alessa now possessed the key to discovering her origins.

Shattered by the loss, Alessa found herself facing off against her mentor's murderer. However, her defeat in battle caused her to fall off the edge of a tall building, possibly to her death. Before hitting the ground, she lost consciousness when a sudden onslaught of extreme pain overwhelmed her. When Alessa eventually woke up on the shores of an unfamiliar beach, she discovered that the unthinkable had happened:Somehow, she had teleported to an unfamiliar land without any knowledge of how she had gotten there.

What was to happen next? Where would she go from here? How could she pick up the pieces of a broken life and create a new beginning?

Above everything else, Alessa is first and foremost an artist. She sees her body as a means of expressing her innermost feelings and desires, not unlike the way other musicians would regard their instruments.

Alessa is classically trained in various dance forms, but particularly specializes in near eastern styled dances that find their roots in Thavnair.

Since the traumatic experience that led to her mentor's passing, Alessa has a tendency to block off her emotions while dancing.

Regardless, her dance technique is still flawless, and this allows her to maintain a steady profession either as a bonded Honeybee at The Beehive (main Norvrandt arc), or as a freelance dancer (Eorzea arc).

ㅤㅤwhere you come inㅤㅤ

If you are a fellow dancer, you would most likely come into contact with Alessa.

Would you be her rival, or would you be the perfect partner that she's been looking for to help her find her passion once again?

If you're a patron or guest at any of her performances, would you be inspired to speak with her after the show?

As one of the most popular and anticipated Ta'waifs debutantes, Alessa was trained to entertain and pleasure future patrons of all genders and orientations.

However, since she had to ensure that she kept her physical purity intact, Alessa has never been physically intimate with anyone.

She has a detached, almost indifferent approach with regards to physical intimacy, and sees her body as a beautifully honed tool that she takes extremely good care of.

As a result, Alessa is not at all shy or hesitant about flaunting or displaying her body in revealing outfits, especially as part of a dance performance.

ㅤㅤwhere you come inㅤㅤ

Alessa is someone who would most likely grant you entrance to her room while being stark naked, or she might start removing and changing her clothes right in front of you.

She regards nudity as a natural / indifferent state, rather than something laced with sexual flavor.

Would you be scandalized and embarrassed, or would you be tempted into more libidinous acts?

Word of Warning: Alessa is not by any measure a loose or seductive character.

Make sure you get my approval first before initiating contact regarding this hook.
Having lost everyone that has ever loved her, Alessa tends to keep people at bay. She falls easily, but learned the hard way that it's too easy for a heart to be shattered.

As a defense mechanism, she runs the moment she feels herself developing feelings for anyone.

Loving and passionate at her core, she has hidden this behind so many layers of protective shields and facades that she fears that side of her might be lost forever.

Alessa has no memory of her life before she was found by Laila. Laila suspected that this was the result of a strong potion administered by the person who left her.

While her suspicions were never proven right, Alessa has never been able to remember anything from her childhood, save some snippets that feature in lucid dreams.

ㅤㅤwhere you come inㅤㅤ

Are you someone from her past that she has forgotten? Would you look to reconnect?

(I'd prefer if we have a discussion on how your character would have known Alessa as well as what part he / she / they would have played in her life.)
Alessa has received training in some forms of martial arts as a form of self-defense during her time in Radz-at-Han.

While her skills aren't as honed as a proper adventurer's would be, Alessa has a particular gift in ranged combat that entails wielding throwing weapons (throwing knives and shurikens) and dual handed weapons (chakrams, glaives, bladed fans, daggers).

Ever since her brutal defeat in her first encounter with Laila's murderer, Alessa is now determined to hone her combat skills so that she would be able to get her revenge.

ㅤㅤwhere you come inㅤㅤ

Alessa has been looking for someone who would be willing to train her in combat. Would you be her teacher / mentor? What would you be looking for in return?

If you're an adventurer, would you be willing to let Alessa join you and assist you in completing your missions / bounties?

ㅤalessa's norvrandt arcㅤ

This is part of a series of short stories that are canon to Alessa's story. These were originally written as a set-up to one of the RP collaborations that I had been the most excited about. As my partner's character was based in Novrandt, I wanted to shape Alessa's story to properly blend into hers.Alessa will also eventually have an Eorzean arc that would most likely happen in the future after these events had transpired. This is to enable me to write with people whose characters are based on Hydaelyn. Regardless, these will still given an insight to Alessa's origins, so hopefully they're worth a read!

It was all so bright. Too bright.

She felt her body lifting, floating into weightlessness as the world swirled around her. Images swirling around her like a kaleidoscopic whirlpool as she felt her heart racing in her chest as quickly as the wing of a hummingbird. Gasping for air, her fingers curled into claws as her eyes darted around, trying to find something, anything, to anchor herself to.

"Alessa."

Is that my name? She wondered as she tumbled through the ethereal mist. Blinking rapidly, she tried to remember, but found that she couldn't.

"I will kill you if you leave."ㅤㅤ

"When you wake, you shall have all the pretty little horses"ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

"I will kill everyone you love."

"Go to sleep, my little baby."ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ"Alessa. It means 'defender'."ㅤㅤ

No. No. She raised her hands, covering her ears as she screamed voicelessly into the void. These shadows are too noisy. She felt herself spiralling downwards, her form growing faint around the edges, almost as if she was dissipating into the mist. She gasped, writhing out in desperation. She squeezed her eyes shut, but the visions continued playing behind her lids. Mocking her, taunting her. She felt herself falling,

Song of the Sea

ㅤI had this song playing on loop while writing this fragment of Alessa's story.ㅤ

"目を覚まして、私のベイビー."

Her eyes snapped open, and she found herself looking at a white haired Au Ra with delicate features that seemed as familiar to her as a song. Her eyes were the softest shade of periwinkle blue, filled with a love so certain that it grounded her. Iridescent scales shimmered over her fair skin like pearlescent rainbows. I know you. She thought in wonderment as she reached a hand out to the vision that felt like the only real thing in the shifting mist.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ"Wake up, my baby."

Who are you to me?ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ

The Au'ra drew her close, her hands gentle as she kissed her on the forehead lightly.

"It's time to wake up."

Alessa gasped, sitting bolt upright. She cringed as her head protested, the rush of blood causing a dizziness so sharp she had to close her eyes. A sense of irritation and loss hung over her, a remnant from yet another dream. They always felt so vividly real while she was in the middle of it, but dissolved into the dust the moment she tried to remember. "This one felt a bit different, though," she murmured as she reached around for her blanket. For some reason, she was freezing. Had she forgotten to fill the oil lamps again? Laila was going to kill her -

Laila.

A surge of pain hit her like a knife through her heart. Breaking through the dissipating mist of her dream came the shards of a nightmare as she recalled what had happened. Laila, dead in her arms. A chance to avenge her that fell flat because she wasn't strong enough."Oh!" Keeping her eyes shut since the dizzy spell still arrested her, Alessa gingerly lifted a hand and ran it over her body to assess the extent of her injuries. She felt her fingers gliding over a powdery dusting that felt gritty over her skin. What was this? As she pondered the foreign texture in bewilderment, she realized something was amiss. "I could have sworn," she muttered as she moved her touch over to her other arm, seeking out her wound. Other than the slight friction from the strange, scratchy substance, there was none. Her skin was intact, bearing no signs of the battle she'd been in.What? The surprise forced her eyes open. Stumbling to her feet, she felt disbelief coursing through her veins as she stumbled around. Her uncertain feet left haphazard patterns in the sand. The sea breeze tasted of salt as it caressed her face, her clothes clinging to her body from where they'd be soaked by the waves.

The... sea?

a goddess of the land & sea

Alessa had only read about it in the illustrated books Laila had specially procured for her when she'd first come to stay at her court. She'd often dreamed that she'd find a patron who was an adventurer, someone who would take her beyond the colorful walls of Radz-at-han to venture out beyond the shores of . But even in her wildest dreams, she had not heard the song of the ocean- the ebb and flow of the waves, the distant cry of a sea bird.As her toes brushed against a soft velvet material, Alessa was broken out of her trance, gasping as she saw her travel pack. Her clothes lay strewn across the beach, and she hurried to gather them up. Shaking the sand off as she folded them and placed them back into her pack, she found the cracked remnants of the wooden box that Laila claimed she'd had on her as a child. Falling to her knees, she ran her fingers over the intricate patterns carved into the wood. The workmanship was astounding as it featured the silhouette of a woman dancing against the backdrop of a moonlit ocean, while tendrils of a forest encompassed the scene."A goddess of the land and sea," Alessa couldn't help musing as she gathered the shards, careful to avoid the splinters. As she wrapped a shawl over the broken box, a horrified thought entered her head.

Where was the bullet?

Rummaging through her pack, Alessa frantically searched for the silver bullet she'd retrieved from Laila's chest. The only clue she had to the murderer's identity. "It can't be gone, it cant," she whispered in desperation. How else would she avenge the death of the only person she could remember loving? How else could she find the monster that destroyed something she held so dear, casting it aside like it was nothing? Twin cores of hatred and despair cascaded through her. She hadn't been strong enough to kill him. Not yet, but she would be one day.She just had to be able to find him.As she dug into her pack, something glittery dropped out. Bending over to pick it up, Alessa's mind was momentarily emptied of her vengeful thoughts. She picked up the silver necklace that had fallen, drawing it up to her eyes for a closer look as the crystal pendant twinkled in the sun. Though the design was simple, the crystal pendant was hauntingly beautiful. Its blue surface had a soft, subtle glow that caught the sun rays and reflected them in iridescent hues. Even with her familiarity with Laila's extensive jewelry collection, Alessa had never seen anything like it. She felt a warmth spread through her extremities as she brushed a finger over the smooth surface.

She hadn't been strong enough to kill him. Not yet, but she would be one day.

She just had to be able to find him.

Suddenly shaking her head, Alessa bit down on her lip to centre her focus. She dropped the necklace back into the pack and left it sitting against a rock as she continued her desperate scavenger hunt. After travelling a short distance up the beach, she heaved a massive sigh of relief as she found the silver bullet partially buried in a heap of sand. Gingerly picking it up, she slipped it into a hidden pocket in her weapons belt. She turned around, meaning to get a fresh change of clothes when she saw a hooded figure approach her velvet pack before picking it up and darting away with it."Why you little... come back!"Alessa cried out in anger as she ran after him. She'd barely taken a few steps before a whirl of dizziness washed over her, her footsteps faltering before she finally crashed down on the sand in an unconscious heap.

the aftermath of laila's passing

Alessa read the letter with dry eyes. And when she was done, she read it again. And again. And again.Reading, but not fully comprehending. She sat there for hours. Or it could have been minutes. Truly, she could not tell. Each heartbeat felt like a sledgehammer blow that was intense in its sharpness, eternal in its pain. Her fingers laced through the silken strands of Laila's hair, the idle action causing wafts of honeyed amber perfume to waft softly in the air, an oasis of solace against the metallic assault of blood.

Hush-a-bye, don't you cry
go to sleep, my little baby

Alessa drew a finger across Laila's lush lips, now deathly pale beneath the lip paint she'd applied this morning. The world had always seen them as a testament to the Viera's sexual prowess. Lips that fell warriors and warlords to their knees with just a single smile. Yet, to Alessa, all she could remember were these same lips singing a lullaby to a child curled up in the darkness just to keep the nightmares at bay. She'd been way too old for lullabies, but that never stopped Laila from holding her close, and singing till dawn broke the shadows that haunted her dreams.

Alessa's Lullaby - Hush-a-Bye
Ashley Serena

ㅤi imagine laila and alessa singing this together someday, somewhere.ㅤ

Now, Alessa was holding her in a nightmare that would not end.No. Alessa's fists bunched up over Laila's hair. This would not be their last memory. Tenderly, carefully, she shifted her mentor's body off her lap onto the floor. Picking up the broken bouquet of wildflowers she had gathered, Alessa started singing softly as she plucked off the prettiest blooms, carefully weaving them into Laila's hair.

"When you wake, you shall have all the pretty little horses. Blacks and bays, dapples and greys,
dancing through the night..."

Alessa's voice trailed off as she tilted her head and listened. The heavy tread of foot steps. A bark of command that had a regimented flavor. They had come for her.For a wild moment, Alessa thought of just curling up and waiting for death to take her. Truth be told, she felt dead inside already. But as she braided a lock of Laila's hair around a rose bud, she winced in pain as she pricked her finger on a stray thorn."Are you weak?"The sting of pain defiantly bit through the debilitating sadness. Alessa couldn't help it as the corner of her lips quirked up. One final reprimand from the only mother she'd ever known."Get up, Alessa. You have to move."Besides, a line from the letter rang true. If what Laila said was true, it wouldn't be her life alone that she would be sacrificing.

what if it was all just another lie?

What if it was just another lie?Still, before she could fully form the thought, she had gotten up on her feet, gathering up the precious items Laila had set aside for her, neatly packing them in a travelling satchel. The deeds, her wooden box, a velvet pouch of jewelry and gold pieces, several sets of her favorite outfits. Feeling as detached from her actions as a marionette, Alessa slipped the blood stained bullet she had removed from Laila's corpse into the velvet pouch.

Her corpse.

Alessa bit down savagely on her bottom lip, trying to choke down the sudden sob that surged through her and was now fighting to emerge from her throat. The taste of blood was bitter in her mouth. Raising her hand to her hair, she undid her headdress, allowing her long, white hair to drape over her shoulder, flowing down her back like a silken waterfall. Reaching down, she picked up the dagger from its sheath around her thigh and raised it to her neck. Squeezing her eyes shut, she slashed the dagger backwards, feeling the blade whisk swiftly past as if it were cutting through butter. The midnight wind tickled her neck as she felt a sudden, foreign lightness. Picking a ribbon up off the table, Alessa tied a knot around her fallen hair and gently placed it upon Laila's chest. The metallic sound of blades being drawn. Eager voices getting louder as foot steps approached.

Alessa knew she'd ought to be hurrying, but her movements were slow and deliberate as she approached the table. An oil lamp stood burning, next to a bottle of apricot wine with two empty glasses. She remembered sitting at that table just the night before.

She'd just refilled the oil lamp when Laila had surprised her with the bottle of wine. "What's this?" Alessa asked, sniffing gingerly as Laila filled the glasses with a hint of a smile. "The sweetest form of liquid fire" had been the Viera's cryptic reply as Alessa suspiciously lifted the glass and tipped its contents into her mouth. She'd been pleased by the refreshing sweetness, but as she swallowed, the alcohol scalded her throat while its fumes assaulted her windpipe. Laila had been bent over with laughter as Alessa glared at her accusingly. Even as she coughed, she couldn't helped staring at her mentor's face, all strong and beautiful against the lamp's flickering light. Laila had chuckled, her eyes flashing with wicked amusement as she gently patted Alessa's back, working her fingers lightly through her hair in an absent-minded, maternal gesture.

Alessa clutched on to this memory; like a talisman, it was the only thing giving her the strength to carry out her next step."I will not let them take you," she promised, gently running a finger along Laila's beautiful face for the last time. Picking up the bottle, she raised it in a toast before taking a deep gulp, relishing the burn in her throat. The pain would keep the sobs at bay. Tipping the bottle, she poured the rest of the contents on the ground.Alessa picked up the lamp and turned it over, allowing the oil to spill out over the floor, over Laila's body. Alcohol and oil. This fire would burn bright indeed.Almost as if the thumping of fists upon the door was a signal, she threw the lamp down. The fire eagerly rippled across the room in a crimson rampage, lighting up the night. Alessa heard the shouts of alarm, as harsh as the smell of charred wood as the fire crackled, spat and blazed.

Goodbye, goodbye. Forever, goodbye.

Picking up the bundle that carried the shards of her old life, Alessa leapt gingerly onto the window sill. As she inhaled, preparing herself for the drop, she heard a loud blast as the wooden door burst open.

"Alessa. Don't you dare."

Gasping, Alessa whipped around. Through the fire, she saw the silhouette of a man through the flames. Even through the blurriness of the infernal heat, she could tell that he stood tall, a broad shouldered, heavily muscled man with the stance of a warrior.

"I will kill you if you leave.
Do you hear me?
I will kill everyone you love. I will kill everyone you will come to love. I will kill them as I killed this whore."

It wasn't so much that he'd shouted. But his voice carried forth, clear and dark across the wood and fabrics dying under the fire's assault. A shard of ice amidst the burning heat that made a shiver run down her spine. Alessa couldn't tell if it was hatred or fear. Perhaps it was both. That voice caused a rupture in her self control as a noise broke free from her. It wasn't anything human, just a feral, broken sort of anguish that echoed into the night.Oh, how she wanted to scream at the stranger behind the flames. Terrible, bloody, heartrending promises of vengeance, the darkest curses known to men. Hopeless pleas to undo the damage he had done, to turn back the clock, for this not to be real. The rage, despair, misery, pain - it near broke her heart. She needed him to hear her, hear her. She needed him to know her hatred. She needed him to fear.

However, the words would not take shape. Only a wild shriek, both guttural and sharp in its madness, emerged from her lips.Alessa reached in her belt for her daggers, and threw them into the blazing inferno. Even in her blinding fury, she felt a icy calm in her chest that told her that her aim would be true. In all her years, she had never missed a target. But even as the weapons sliced through the air, there was no satisfying squelch of metal meeting flesh. Alessa barely had time to squint through the flames before she saw a bright object flying towards her at a blinding speed. Gasping, she looked down to see her own dagger lodged in her shoulder."What.."She bit back a shriek of defiance. How could he have not only have avoided, but also deflected her throw? A blur of silver made her look up in horror as she saw the other dagger flying right towards her chest. Flipping back, she threw herself off the ledge just in time to feel the blade slice past her arm, ripping open a gash as her blood spilled out. As she fell, Alessa's hands clutched at her pack, bracing herself for a fall that she knew would be incapacitating if not fatal. She felt wooden splinters pierce her fingers even as they brushed against something cool and smooth. A stone? But what could it -Alessa's scream cut off as a blinding pain ricocheted through her body for a second before the darkness took her.

She needed him to hear her, hear her. She needed him to know her hatred.

She needed him to fear.

a letter to Alessa written by Laila.

My Alessa,If you get to read this, it probably means that I'm no longer with you. I am so sorry. I always meant to tell you this in person. Sometimes, I look at you, grown woman that you have become, and I still see you as that tiny child who carried such fire and sadness in her eyes. But this is no time to reminisce.I am a spy for the Shinobi, and I have been working undercover for them since I turned 13. Through my time as a Ta'Waif, I've been dealing in secrets; gathering information from drunk patrons in lieu of gold. I always planned to tell you, in fact; warrior soul that you are, I had thought to recruit you. My Alessa, defender of the weak. You would have been perfect for our cause. But, the life of a spy is fraught with danger, and you already carried more on your shoulders than any child ever should. I was waiting for the perfect time; but time is no one's servant, and it makes fools of us all.Alessa, your life is in peril. I have always kept an eye out for information about your background. And while doing so, I stumbled upon the makings of a plan by an organization, only known as Celatum. They mean to capture you, and you must not let them. I say this not just because you are the heart of my heart, but because countless innocents will suffer should their plan prevail. I wish I had more information for you, but in all my years as a spy, I've never seen anything that has frightened me this much. This is a highly meticulous scheme that has been in the works for years, possibly before you were born. I wish I could say with certainty what organization or individual is behind this, but I fear false leads and conjectures would cause more damage than good.

I was waiting for the perfect time; but time is no one's servant, and it makes fools of us all.

But always remember. You are the best and brightest, a true warrior. You will not break.

You must leave Thavnair at once. Take all the deeds and bonds in my drawer; these should allow you to lead a comfortable life until you find a safe place to set up your new life. I know you've spurned all inclinations to find out about your childhood, but I've had people look into the wooden box you had in possession as a child. It is made of the wood of a rare tree that only grows in Othard. You must board the merchant ship to Kugane. Not only will you be far from those who bear you ill here, you would stand the best chance of discovering your roots. I have contacts there, allies who will help you. They will know to look out for you.I am heartbroken to leave you like this, my oasis, my baby. But always remember. You are the best and brightest, a true warrior. You will not break. Be safe, and whatever you do: live; love. Be safe, and happy.
I have loved you always, and always will I love you.

Yours, ㅤㅤㅤㅤ
Lailaㅤㅤㅤ
